Exposure to perchlorate, nitrate, and thiocyanate among pregnant women in Norway.
Researchers measured three environmental chemicals in the urine of pregnant Norwegian women that can interfere with thyroid function by blocking iodine absorption. Women who used snus (moist tobacco) daily had notably higher levels of one chemical (thiocyanate) compared to non-users, though chemical levels varied substantially within individual women over time.
Relevance to India: None stated.
