E-cigarette puffs per day and changes in cigarettes per day among combustible cigarette smokers with opioid use disorder: A secondary analysis of the Electronic Cigarettes to Address Combustible Cigarette Smoking for People With opioid use disorder (ERASER) study.
Among people with opioid use disorder who smoke, those who successfully reduced their cigarette consumption by at least half showed a distinctive pattern: they increased their e-cigarette use early on and maintained higher usage levels throughout a 4-week trial. Those who failed to reduce cigarettes showed stable or declining e-cigarette use, suggesting that adequate e-cigarette adoption may be necessary for switching away from combustible cigarettes in this population.
